What does partnering with patients mean?

by | 11 Mar 2016

In a Pharma Talk Radio interview, Marc Boutin – Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Council – shares his views on what partnering with patients means.
“Partnering with patients in terms of medicines development means starting with the patient’s perspective. While the science is incredibly important we need to understand the problem we hope to solve from the patient’s perspective.”

“Historically we’ve used surrogates to understand the patient perspective, sometimes doctors, sometimes researchers or others. They may have their own views of what is important but when we talk with patients who have the condition they often have very different views of their needs and priorities.”

“The bottom line is that medicines serve patients – this means that patients’ needs and priorities should be the start of medicines development.”
